TL;DR

  • We wrote a long answer to "what do you actually do?" for our new Advisory Board, and we are publishing it in full.
  • It covers domaining from first principles, the industry map, Domaincracy's three lines of business, the daily routine, and the open questions ahead.
  • Read it at domaincracy.com/about.

Domaincracy has been buying, holding and selling domain names since 2017, and building tools for people who do the same since 2024. Explaining that to someone outside the industry usually takes a conversation. We finally wrote the conversation down.

The document was written first for the company's Advisory Board, a small group of trusted associates who advise on direction. The same questions come from everyone else, so it is now a public page. In seven sections it explains:

  1. Domaining in 15 minutes. What a domain is as an asset, why some names hold value, the three ways a name makes money, the drop lifecycle, where names get sold, why prices are opaque, and the legal edges. Six of our own sales as worked examples: Bouncy.com, lawdit.com, fogo.ai, eth.club, healthright.com and autorouter.com.
  2. The industry map. Registries, registrars, marketplaces, data providers, community and policy bodies, and where Domaincracy sits among them.
  3. What Domaincracy does. The portfolio, Appraise.net, the planned domain financing product, and the policy work at ICANN.
  4. How the machine runs. The daily drop evaluation, listings, marketing and inbound routine, and the weekly to monthly cycle.
  5. Where we're heading. The open opportunities in investing, services, marketing and succession, stated candidly.

Plus a glossary and a reading list for anyone who wants to go deeper.

If you own a name and want to know what it is worth, start with the domaining section and then Appraise.net. If you are thinking about working with us, the last section is where the open questions are.
